Take your time

Find a quiet place where you are undisturbed. How about making yourself a cosy “feeding corner” with a soft blanket, subdued lighting and quiet music? Try to take your time when feeding - a rushed feed can make you and baby anxious - and always have a drink for yourself to hand. Breathe slowly and regularly. Relax your shoulders and arms with the help of the Anita nursing cushion. Imagine your milk is flowing to your baby. Think of something pleasant and enjoy this intimate time together.

Before breastfeeding stimulate the let-down reflex by gently massaging the breast or applying warmth. Your baby will not have to suck so hard and the breast will be less tender or swollen. Ensure that your baby latches on properly, sufficiently close to the breast and with its mouth wide open, and not just on the nipple. Changing the nursing position also helps. If the soreness does not ease, ask your midwife or breastfeeding counsellor for help sooner rather than later.
