Why is a maternity bra important?

How the breast changes during pregnancy

Slight tension and sensitivity in the breasts and the dreaded morning sickness are often the first indications of a pregnancy. The breasts start to prepare for their important job after birth - breastfeeding.  This preparation involves noticeable physical changes.

The female breast comprises connective tissue, glands, fat and a covering of skin. It does not contain any muscle but sits upon the musculo-skeletal frame.  Pregnancy hormones already start to stimulate the breast glands in the early months of pregnancy, and the breast becomes larger and matures to produce sufficient milk for the baby when it is born. In addition, water is stored in the tissue, so that each breast gains around 300 to 500 grams in weight during pregnancy.

Growth of the breast during pregnancy

This growth puts a great strain on both the skin and the connective tissue of the breast. If it is not given sufficient support, its form can change and unsightly stretch marks can occur on the skin. If the mum-to-be has a large bust, she can also suffer from painful tension across the shoulders, back and neck.

Special Anita maternity bras provide optimum support

During the first few months of pregnancy, conventional bras are normally sufficient. However, these generally become too small after the third month. Then, ideally from the fourth month onwards, an Anita maternity bra should be worn, as it expands along with the growing breast, providing sufficient support and room to grow throughout pregnancy. In this way stretch marks and changes in the breast shape can be prevented, or at least minimised.

All Anita maternity bras are made of soft, stretch fabric which ensure a particularly high level of comfort and do not irritate the sensitive breast. They adapt perfectly to the growing breast without restriction and with the wide, adjustable straps effectively relieve strain across the shoulders, back and neck.  All Anita bra models guarantee an excellent fit and optimum support through to the larger sizes.
