Pinktober discovering hands

1. Start by visually inspecting your breast in the mirror. Look for visual changes like dents, protrusions or retracted areas of the nipple.

2. Then begin with the tactile screening of each breast. Lay your hand flat onto the breast and use your fingers to feel for abnormalities in stroking movements. Use your left hand on the right breast and vice versa.

3. Check each area of your breast carefully and right up into the armpit for palpable bulges, knots and check for any secretions from the nipple.

ANITA and discovering hands join forces for the early detection of breast cancer

ANITA will donate €1 for each product sold during the campaign. The money will go towards teaching MTUs (medical tactile screeners) in India, Nepal, Columbia, Mexico, Austria and Germany. With these newly trained professionals, ANITA will support this supplementary medical tactile breast screening.

Tactile breast screening as promoted by discovering hands, is a global initiative in which blind and vision-impaired women will utilise their exceptionally acute sense of touch for this additional method for detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages.

Promotional period: Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 2021

How to detect breast cancer early? Women from the age of 30 are entitled to an annual tactile screening by their gynaecologist; mammography screening is additionally offered from the age of 50.

The general interest non-profit organisation discovering hands seeks to further improve this offering. discovering hands trains blind and visually impaired women to allow them to utilise their exceptionally acute tactile senses as an additional option for breast cancer screening.

The procedure is called tactilography and is meant to help optimise early detection of breast cancer. The tactile screening takes between 30 and 60 minutes and is done by a medical tactile screener (MTU). Tactilography entails the tactile screening of the breast in a standardised pattern. The MTU will then forward the results to the attending physician,
who will discuss the findings directly with the patient. An MTU has the ability to detect the most minute changes in breast tissue – which may be a life saver for some women.

Breast cancer is the most frequent type of cancer in women

In Germany alone, 71,000 new cases are diagnosed each year

There are currently 87 MTU in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Mexico, India and Colombia

MTUs have the ability to detect tissue abnormalities of just 6-8 mm (the bright pink bead in the picture)

A scientific study has found that MTUs discover 30% more and 50% smaller tissue anomalies than gynaecologists.

With the additional support from ANITA, more blind and vision-impaired women can be trained to become MTUs, giving them a career perspective and a professional future.

India

Almost 50% of cases are women between 25 and 50 years old. More than 70% of cases in advanced stages had a low chance of survival and high mortality.

Columbia

Annual breast cancer numbers had risen by 55% within 6 years (2012-2018). A projection from the year 2020 predicts another increase by 53% by 2040. (Source: iccp-portal.org)

Mexico

45.5% of all breast cancer cases in Mexico are women under the age of 50. Breast cancer is, in fact, the second highest type of cancer prevalent in Mexico and accounts for 16.4% of cancer cases in women overall. The mortality rate for women with breast cancer has doubled in Mexico over the past 10 years. Researchers predict that Mexico will have to triple its hospital resources if current breast cancer trends persist. Current health recommendations in Mexico state that women should begin with annual mammography screenings at the age of 50; according to latest numbers, almost half of the female population is currently untested and vulnerable. Many cases of breast cancer in Mexico are diagnosed in late stages due to the lack of information and resources.

Tactilography

discovering hands utilises the highly acute tactile senses of blind and vision-impaired women by training them to become medical tactile screeners (MTU). Tactilography is a supplementary type of diagnostics for the early detection of breast cancer in all age groups.

We asked discovering hands to help us select a new material for the prosthesis pocket of our Anita care specialist bras using their tactile senses.

In an exhaustive series of tests, 10 MTU inspected the fabrics of our final selection intensely with their tactile senses and rated them in accordance with predefined criteria.

“This collaboration was very exciting. We had narrowed down our fabric selection based on various material blends, desired functions and the required cut. The next step had to be the way they felt. And that is how we found discovering hands. The testers found distinctive differences we had never registered at all. Just like us, discovering hands is completely invested in the breast cancer topic. We are completely over the moon about this opportunity
to work with them on such an important issue!”
