Discover how your bra might be causing back pain and learn simple solutions for relief.

Back pain is currently the number one common ailment. Who is surprised when we perform sedentary activities, look at our smartphones or tablets countless times a day, and thus overstrain our necks? We exercise less because we prefer to spend our free time differently, or we don't feel like jogging through the forest after work. Lack of exercise is the main reason for back problems. Poor posture and the resulting tension can lead to pain.

Even a bra can cause pain in the neck or the area of the thoracic spine – but very few of us realize this. If the bra straps are too tight and cut into the flesh, they press on muscles that harden, as well as on nerve pathways. This can lead to neck problems and headaches in sensitive people. This is especially often the case when the bra has to support a heavy bust, as the weight burdens the straps, which have to withstand a lot with a bust from D/E cup onwards. The solution to the problem? Bras with a firmer underbust band and high bridge that supports the bust and thus takes the load off the shoulders. Widened straps that are softly padded also help to avoid neck problems. At Anita and Rosa Faia there are bras for large busts with these "special effects" – the lingerie is fashionable and chic: No medical supply store style!

Even with problems of the thoracic spine, the bra can be a cause. If it is too tight, the closure presses on one or two thoracic vertebrae. The nerve exits at the vertebral bodies are irritated and can cause stabbing pain with certain movements. To avoid pain, we often adopt a protective posture. Unfortunately, this leads to incorrect loading of the spine and joints and to tense muscles throughout the body.

If you believe that your bra might be the reason or one of the reasons for your back problems, you should go to a specialist store, describe your problem, buy a comfortable bra, and then wear it. Please do not wear bras that do not fit anymore!

Supportive measures for back pain due to tension include heat treatments, physiotherapy, massages, less stress, exercise, and targeted exercises from physical therapy to relieve and strengthen the muscles.
